La Brea ("the tar")
for string quartet
Duration: 5'
2005
Instrumentation: string quartet
La Brea ("the tar") was commissioned by Joanna Hood in 2005 for the Los Angeles-based Eclipse Quartet. Forty thousand years earlier, saber-tooth cats, mammoths and mastodons roamed the Los Angeles Basin and wandered into a pool of oozing black asphalt, from which they couldn't escape.
This short epigrammatic piece sounds an alarm about global warming, with temperatures predicted to rise in the next century as much as they fell during the last Ice Age. Watch where you step!
